Are you in compliance with the new National Motor Freight Classification System?

Everyone in the industry is aware that when shipping LTL (typically shipments between 150 and 10,000 lbs.), every item is assigned an NMFC number and an associated freight class; the higher the freight class the higher the shipping cost.

Beginning July 19, 2025, changes were enacted nationally that affect how LTL freight is classified, quoted, and priced.

The new classification system assigns freight class based on shipment density. Many items have been assigned a higher number; which leads to higher freight expenses. In addition, carriers are penalizing shippers who mis-classify shipped items. As such, it is important to understand the impact of these changes and to reclassify your items accordingly.

If you currently employ the CalcRate TMS program, ARTC has prepared an update that will assign the correct new freight class for you if the dimensions are provided.
