Replication to SQL server

Categorized as:

What are you using to replicate your IBM i database to SQL server for reporting? We have been using DBMoto but it is going out of support. The cost of the replacement products I have been looking at are more than an order of magnitude higher.

John,

What kinds of reporting do you need to do? You can easily make templates in Excel that connect and export the required data, format as required, and chart. And if you have even a little VBA and macro experience, you can make very sophisticated reports with little effort.

Zach, you mentioned Gluesync from Molo17. Have you got it up and running ? Do you like it ?
Does it replicate journals to SQL in near real-time?

I don't see the need of a dedicated tool. I would suggest, as Jason mentioned, to do the reporting directly from IBM i. You will definitely have better options for performance improvements.

We use some homegrown tools in Access and .Net for syncing a handful of tables to SQL. We don't do this for reporting, that comes from DB2; but due to speed and other issues, we do use it for certain operational data we need from DB2 tables.

Why are you not reporting directly from db2? We do replicate a subset of our data to a cloud based SQL Server for a reporting portal. We use SQL Merge statements on an hourly schedule to update the data, so not true replication, but it works for us.

We are currently in the process of installing and configuring Gluesync from Molo17. We looked at a number of other options but the offering from Molo17 seems to be the best documented and the sales folks got out of the way and let the developer talk and describe the product to us.

John,

Would you consider doing your reporting directly on IBM i. Why move it to MS SQLSrv? You can use a tool like SEQUEL on IBM i. It works directly on your IBM i data base for reporting. At Fortra, we have been helping customers for years provide reporting around DB2 on IBM i. We can also include data from other Databases.

Good luck on your search

Tom
