The costliest data errors are often the ones that don't announce themselves. They show up as a line on a chargeback report. A customer call about a missing shipment notice. A purchase order that sat in exception for two days before anyone caught it. By the time the problem is visible, it has already cost something. Time, money, or credibility with a trading partner you can't afford to frustrate.

For manufacturers the cost of EDI errors compounds in specific ways. A misrouted 850 means a purchase order that didn't make it into your ERP cleanly. A late 856 means a shipment the customer couldn't plan for. A rejected acknowledgment means a transaction that looked complete on your end but wasn't. Each of these has a downstream cost, and most of them are preventable.

Where Accuracy Comes From

Accuracy in EDI is not a software feature. It is a discipline. It comes from mapping that accounts for every field, every edge case, and every partner-specific variation. It comes from testing against real transaction data, not just sample files. And it comes from monitoring that watches the live transaction stream and flags problems before they reach your trading partner.

The places where accuracy breaks down are almost always the same. A map built to an older version of the partner's specification. A field that gets pulled from the wrong location in the ERP data. An acknowledgment that goes back out without the information the partner requires. These are small failures with real consequences, and they tend to repeat until someone fixes the root cause.

What the Managed Level Looks Like

A managed partner owns the accuracy of the transaction stream. When a spec changes, the map gets updated. When an exception fires, it gets resolved at the EDI layer before it creates a downstream problem. When a partner starts seeing errors they haven’t seen before, the investigation happens on our side, not yours.

For IBMi shops, this level of oversight is worth more than it sounds. The platform is stable and the ERP is capable. What creates variability is the layer between the ERP and the trading partner. Keeping that layer current and clean is what a managed partner does every day.

If transaction accuracy or data accuracy has been a source of friction in your operation, we would be glad to take a look. Reach out to Frank at fazzalina@unilinkgroup.com or visit www.unilinkgroup.com.
